Another day of round-robin action in Riga, Latvia is now complete! Day 5 at the men’s World Hockey Championships had four games on the schedule so let’s get to the recap.
The first game of the day came out of Group A. Great Britain and Denmark took the ice hoping to improve their records. Great Britain took an early lead but Denmark was able to tie it up. Denmark then scored to go ahead 2-1. With just a few minutes remaining in regulation, Great Britain tied it up to send the game to overtime. Markus Lauridsen scored in overtime to claim the game for Denmark with a 3-2 final score.
The next game of the day was a Group B matchup between Kazakhstan and the United States. Midway through the first period, the USA opened the scoring. Adam Clendening scored his second of the tournament to put his team up 1-0. Early in the second period, Trevor Moore added another goal for the USA. Jack Drury scored in the third period and the USA went on to win 3-0. It was a shutout for USA goalie, Cal Petersen.
The third game of the day was in Group A. Sweden’s offensive fire power was on display which was an unfortunate sight for their opponents, the Swiss. Sweden scored seven unanswered goals over the course of 60 minutes. Switzerland couldn’t manage to capitalize on any chances. Nils Lundkvist led the way for the Swedes with four points (1G, 3A) in the game. In addition, Adrian Kempe, Jesper Froden and Henrik Tommernes each finished the game with three points. Adam Reideborn made 28 saves for Sweden in the shutout.
The final game of the day was between Group B’s Finland and Norway. Although Norway scored first, Finland took the game into their own hands and won 5-2. Finland was able to tie the game up at one by the end of the first period and by the end of 40 minutes, they led 3-1. Norway came within one early in the third period but Finland scored two more to secure the win.
There are four more games on the schedule for Wednesday. Russia and Denmark will open the Group A action followed by a game between Belarus and Great Britain. In Group B, Kazakhstan will play Germany and Canada will play Norway.
