The Riga Recap: Day 7

Another day in Riga is now in the books! Welcome back to the Riga Recap where we detail all the action at the men’s World Hockey Championships in Latvia. Day 7 had four games on the schedule so let’s get to the recap.

The opening game of the day was from Group A between Switzerland and Slovakia. While Slovakia held Switzerland to just one goal in the first period, the offence exploded after that. By the end of the second, Switzerland led 6-1. They added two more goals in the final frame to secure the 8-1 win.

Group B’s first game of the day was a matchup between the host Latvia and the United States. Matt Tennyson opened the scoring just over a minute into the game. The teams exchanged goals and were tied at two after the first period. In the second period, Trevor Moore and Matty Beniers added goals for the United States. The score remained 4-2 for the remainder of the game and the USA claimed victory.

Group A’s next game saw the Czech Republic battle it out against Sweden. Sweden got out to a lead, scoring two goals before the end of the first period. The Czech Republic came back ready to take the game into their hands. As soon as they stepped on the ice for the second period, their offence started flowing. Jakub Vrana scored just 1:10 into the middle frame. The Czech Republic scored four unanswered goals to beat Sweden 4-2.

The final game of the day came out of Group B. This game was a matchup between Italy and Finland. The Finns went ahead 2-0 in the first frame and added another in the second period. They kept the door shut on the Italians and walked away with a 3-0 win.

With day 8 comes another four games. In Group A, Sweden will play Great Britain and Denmark will take on Belarus. In Group B, Canada and Kazakhstan will open the day followed by Latvia and Norway.
