If you slept through the USA vs. Australia game, you didn’t miss much. The match ended in a 0-0 draw, and both sides seemed to be content with the result. With the tie the USWNT clinched second place in Group G. Australia finished third and will also move on into the elimination round based on the results of the rest of the field.
Both the U.S. and Australia had scoring chances in the first half– Australia’s Mary Fowler had a header ricochet of the crossbar in the 20th minute, while the USWNT’s Alex Morgan had a goal disallowed by VAR by the slimmest of margins in the 33rd minute.
The second half was uneventful as both teams committed to defensive minded, possession heavy tactics with virtually no real scoring opportunities for either side. The 0-0 score seemed satisfactory for both sides as they turn their attention to the knockout stages.
It will be a 2019 World Cup Final rematch for the USWNT as they take on the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Friday. The match will be played in Yokohama at International Stadium at 7 a.m. ET.
